(4 semester or 6 quarter academic units) REQUIREMENT: All students who enroll in this course must have taken the Making Math Real: Overview course.
*This Fractions course fulfills the prerequisite for taking the Pre-Algebra course.
MMR is a developmental program wherein each new mathematical development directly builds the foundation for the next. Continuing the development of the 2 strands, this course provides the essential bridge that links the synthesis of the 4 operations and the 400 math facts to algebraic processing and development. Fractions and their related applications are required tools for successful mathematical processing through calculus. This course will provide you with effective, hands-on strategies that finally make fractions, decimals, and advanced place value meaningful and accessible for all students. It is designed for educational therapists, special educators, and elementary and secondary classroom teachers. Parents and those who consider themselves non-math majors are especially encouraged to enroll. Topics include comprehensive methods for teaching full units in advanced place value, including exponents through the billions; fractions, including the four concepts, the 4 operations through mixed fractions, comparing and ordering; and a comprehensive unit for reading and writing decimals, including the 4 operations through mixed decimals, comparing and ordering, and decimals on the number line. Extension and enrichment activities for each unit are presented. Extensive color-coding is a critical element of the program. Please bring 4 colored markers or pencils in blue, green, red and black.
